Henry Peters Gray
American (1819-1877)
One of the more popular portrait painters of his day, Gray was also known for his historical allegory and genre paintings. Throughout his career, Gray studied and painted throughout Europe, as well as painting in Boston and New York City. He studied with Daniel Huntington and was a member of the National Academy, where he was president from 1870-71. His works were exhibited at the National Academy, the Brooklyn Art Association, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876.
