Elwyn George Gowen
American (1895-1954)
Elwyn George Gowen was born in Sanford, Maine at the turn of the century. He graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1918 with highest honors. Gowen began his career focused on design, but in 1932 became a student of Charles Woodbury in Ogunquit, Maine, where he shifted his attention to painting landscapes and seascapes. In 1935 he was invited to serve as an instructor and associate of Woodbury’s in his Ogunquit and Boston studios. He also held teaching positions at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Attleboro Museum of Art.
Gowen belonged to the Ogunquit Art Association and the American Federation of Arts. He exhibited his paintings in Boston, Philadelphia and New York City.
