Hermann Goebel
German (1885-1945)
Painter, etcher and lithographer, Hermann Goebel was born in Dormagen, Germany in 1885. He studied at the academy in Karlsruher and then traveled through Europe, through Italy, Spain, France and Belgium before returning to Karlsruher where he was a professor from 1910 to 1920.
Known for his landscape and still life paintings, Goebel captured a lush floral bouquet in “Still Life with Flowers and Lemon” with a combination of loose, impressionistic brushwork and intricate detail. The work is filled with a wonderful sense of light, and Goebel’s skill is evident in the rendering of the reflections in the spoon and glass of water as well as the sophisticated shadowing in the red throw.
