Grove Gilbert
American (1805-1885)
Born in Clinton, New York in 1805, genre and portrait artist Grove Sheldon Gilbert painted and taught in Leroy and Niagara. Shortly after, he established a studio in Rochester, New York where he became known as “the artist of Rochester.” Gilbert exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Rochester Art Club and was elected an honorary member of the Albany Academy of Arts and National Academy of Design. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Rochester Historical Society.
