Eugene Samuel Auguste Fromentin
French (1820-1876)
Eugène-Samuel-Auguste Fromentin-Dupeux was born in La Rochelle, in southwestern France, in 1820. He studied under Louis Cabat, the landscape painter, and exhibited at the Salon. Fromentin visited Algeria at least twice and was known for his North African scenes. He was also the author of several books on art, including the celebrated book on Dutch and Flemish painting, Les Maîtres d’Autrefois (The Old Masters, 1876). His work is in the Musee d’Orsay.
