Robert Frangeš-Mihanović

Croatian (1872-1940)

Born in 1872 in Sremska Mitrovica in what is now Serbia, Robert Frangeš-Mihanović was a prominent Croatian sculptor.  He graduated from the School of Crafts in Zagreb in 1889. He went on to study in Vienna from 1889-1895 and then continued his studies in Paris in 1900, where he met Auguste Rodin and the Italian sculptor, Medardo Rosso, who was working in Paris. He was one of the founders of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1907.  He established a bronze foundry at the Academy.  Frangeš-Mihanović’s mastery of bronze is visible in his many sculptures, although he also worked in wood, clay and stone.

FrangeÅ¡-Mihanović’s work is in the Museum of Arts and Crafts, Zagreb, and the Museum of Modern Art, Dubrovnik.
