John Nathaniel Fenton
American (1912-1977)
Born in 1912 in Mountaindale, New York, American surrealist John Nathaniel Fenton studied at the Art Students League of New York and later at Atelier 17 in Paris under Samuel Adler and Federico Castellon.
In 1958, Fenton received awards from the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In addition to these honors, the artist was awarded a Purchase Prize from the New School Graphics Annual, an Edition Purchase from Pratt Institute, and the Emily Lowe Memorial Award from Audubon Artists. Fenton exhibited regularly in galleries throughout New York City as well as at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Chicago Art Institute, Butler Art Institute, Wesleyan University, Pennsylvania State University and Woodstock Art Museum.
Fenton’s work is held in permanent collections of the Pennsylvania State University Museum, Suffolk Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum.
