William Wilson Cowell
American (born 1856)
William Cowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts and lived primarily in Chicago, spending summers in Nova Scotia. He studied at the PennsylvaniaAcademy of the Fine Arts with Edward Moran and John Faulkner, and exhibited at the Academy from 1876-1900. Cowell’s works were also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Art Association. Cowell specialized in marine subjects, and worked in New York from 1870 to 1872, in Nahant, Massachusetts, and in Narragansett, Rhode Island, capturing the coast.
