Carlton Chapman
American (1860-1925)
Born in 1860 in New London, Ohio, Chapman turned his sights toward the coast and the sea during his art studies. He is well known for his renditions of marine scenes, and exhibited a variety of harbor and coastal scenes around Cape Ann, New Jersey and Gloucester, Massachusetts at the Boston Arts Club from 1885 through 1908.
Chapman also exhibited his works at the Columbia Exposition, the Brooklyn Arts Association (1883-1886), the National Academy of Design (1884-1900), Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1885, 1887-88, 1890-1905), Paris Salon (1889) and the Corcoran Gallery, DC (1907-08). He was a member of the National Arts Club, New York City, the Society of American Arts, the American Watercolor Society as well as the Lotus Club. Chapman’s paintings can be found in the collections of the Toledo Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum and the St. Louis Art Museum.
