Charles Edward Chambers
American (1883-1941)
Born in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1883, artist Charles Edward Chambers studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later attended the National Academy of Design where he studied under George Bridgman. Chambers illustrated stories for writers such as W. Somerset Maugham, Pearl S. Buck and Louis Bromfield for publication in magazines such as Harper’s, Cosmopolitan, Woman’s Home Companion, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s and Redbook. He was a member of the Allied Artists of America, Society of Illustrators and was President of the Artists Guild. He was best known for his more than forty five billboard displays for Chesterfield Cigarettes advertisements and Steinway & Sons portraits that ran during the early 1900s.
In 1931, Chambers was awarded the second Altman Prize at the National Academy of Design, and in 2010 was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators.
