Walter Martin Baumhoffer
American (1904-1986)
Walter Martin Baumhoffer was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1904. Baumhoffer received his artistic training through a scholarship to the Pratt Institute in 1923 and with renowned American illustrator and muralist Dean Cornwell (1892-1960). An avid painter and illustrator, Baumhoffer was a member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York City. He exhibited extensively during his career including at the Brooklyn Museum in 1940, the Society of Illustrators annuals from 1943 to 1954 as well as a solo show in 1943, the Stony Brook Museum in 1951, and the Suffolk Museum where he won an award in 1951. Various museums, corporations, and private collectors own BaumhofferĂÂs works. These include the Custer Museum in Monroe, Michigan, the Northport Federal Savings Association (whose founder commissioned Baumhoffer for a portrait), the 4H Clubs National Headquarters, and the Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC.
