John Stewart Barney

American (1869-1925)

American artist John Stewart Barney was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1869. During his diverse career he worked as a painter, architect, sculptor and writer. Barney completed a series of three marble relief sculptures that adorn the entrance to the Hart Memorial Building of the Troy Public Library in Troy, New York. However, his specialty was landscape paintings in which he captured the spectacular mountain, river, and coastal vistas of the northeast. Barney held membership in the Newport Art Association and later died in New York City in 1925.
