Jane Armstrong

American (b. 1921)

Born in Buffalo, New York in 1921, sculptor Jane Armstrong studied at Middlebury College, Pratt Institute and at the Art Students League in New York under John Hovannes and Jose de Creeft. She later taught art in the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont.

Armstrong was a member of the Sculptors Guild, National Sculpture Society, Audobon Artists, Allied Artists of America and the National Association of Women Artists. Her first solo show took place in 1967 followed by numerous gallery, museum and university exhibitions, including multiple shows at the Frank Rehn Gallery in New York and an exhibition at the Marjorie Parr Gallery in London. One of the first pieces she sold was a pink alabaster fawn purchased by Steven Rockefeller. Armstrong created more than 600 sculptures in her career and of all her awards she was most proud that in 2004 the National Sculpture Society honored her with a gold medal for “the entire body of her work.” Her work is held in more than 350 private and public collections worldwide.
