Gesner Armand
French (1936-2008)
Born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti in 1936, artist Gesner Armand joined the Centre d’Art at the age of fourteen where he studied drawing under Haitian painters Maurice Borno and Pierre Monosiet. Armand was awarded a scholarship from the French government in 1961 to the École Nationale Beaux Arts and lived in Paris until 1962. He was the Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College from 1984 until 1992.
One of the foremost Haitian impressionists, rendering the heart and soul of Haiti, Armand exhibited widely in Haiti, Mexico, France, Spain, Jamaica, Martinique, Venezuela, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Israel, the Dominican Republic and the United States. His works are held in the permanent collections of The Chicago Gallery of Haitian Art and Bryant University, among others.
