Hardy was born in Brighton, Sussex in 1822, the oldest of eight children. His father was a musician to George IV, Queen Adelaide and Queen Victoria in the Royal household at Windsor. Hardy’s brother, Frederick Daniel, was also a painter, and both were members of the Cranbrook Colony in Kent. Hardy was an oil painter specializing in genre subjects. Hardy exhibited his works at the Royal Academy from 1846 to 1892, as well as the British Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.
